This year it's Heavenly Harmonies |
|||
| After three years of cheeky charity calendars, raising £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Relief, the Heavenly Hunks are back. This time it is their voices that are attracting attention. Renowned for beautiful singing, prior to taking their shirts off, and with growing audiences at their concerts over the last three years, the young choir men of Portsmouth Cathedral have decided to produce ‘Heavenly Harmonies’ a beautifully orchestrated CD to give musical pleasure throughout the year. Portsmouth Cathedral’s young choir men, used to stripping to the waist for their now famous annual saucy calendar, have compiled a CD of their most requested performance pieces. The close harmonies blend the old with the new, with such favourites as ‘How deep is your Love?’ sitting comfortably alongside ‘God so Loved the world’. The compilation reveals the choir men as an emerging talent within the British music industry – they will go far and so will their fundraising efforts. The support that they have received from both the national and international press has been fundamental to the success of the project and has meant that fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Relief has gone from strength to strength. |

David Price, Director of Music, said: “We’ve had a terrifically warm response from people within the diocese, all over the UK and from over 25 other countries; it’s been brilliant. We sometimes get introduced at recitals as Mr November of The Heavenly Hunks! One of the models was invited to open a Mothers’ Union coffee morning. “We managed to break into the international market last year as we had as many sales abroad as we did in the UK. We reached as far as North America, Australia, Russia and Japan. It had a boost from appearing on the BBC website just before Christmas last year and the international press seemed to like the story as we received lots of coverage. We are now being asked to sing as the Hunks and as most of these lads will go onto Oxford and Cambridge and some of the best music colleges in the country it is such a brilliant experience they can take with them. “I think the image of our Cathedral for the younger generation has changed as a result. And it’s nice for the older generation to see that young people do care enough to do this kind of thing. Some of the aged in the cathedral also say things like ‘I did like September’!” The Bishop of Portsmouth, The Rt Rev Kenneth Stevenson, has fully endorsed this project, which has been set up by the Portsmouth Cathedral Choir Association, and said: 'I support anything that involves young people having fun as part of the church and congratulate these lads who have bared more than their souls to raise money for these charities!' The Heavenly Hunks have two aims: Firstly to raise awareness for the Macmillan Cancer Relief and help in the understanding of the wonderful work they do supporting individuals with cancer and their families and friends. You can read more about this work on their own web site which you can access from the charities page of this site. Secondly to raise money for Macmillian; in fact by buying a CD will have donated to MacMillian Cancer Relief and we hope to be able to beat the amount we raised last year. So please help us raise some money by going to the to order page and buy a CD today!! Press me to hear the Heavenly Harmonies CD. This whole project has been a wonderful challenge to all involved and we do hope you enjoy the choral harmonies. Please feel free give us feedback via the about us page.
